What are fountain pens? Almost all affordable fountain pens feature a nib in hard stainless steel metal, rhodium gold or several others. They are also designed with the feed located at the back of the nib and the ink supply. Ink supplied to the nib could either be the cartridge type, piston type, a converter, in the form of a plunger, a vacuum, or even a sac. The idea is to provide the nib with an ink storage canister to allow the continuous supply of ink. Perhaps the only downside of fountain type of pens is that the ink tends to dry-out and clog; thus maintenance must be done to keep it in good writing mode. How often must a fountain pen be cleaned? Usual practices involve the cleaning of the pen at least every after second refill, whether it is from a cartridge or Ink Bottle.

Can water be used in the cleaning process? Definitely, but use only cold or tap water since anything hot could damage the feed section of the pen. For hard and stubborn dried ink, soak the nib section overnight into a cup of water mixed with a teaspoon of household ammonia.

Cleaning the nib is usually done under a faucet. Keep it under water pressure until it runs clear or use a syringe to force water through it. This method is recommended for dirty fountain type of pens.

Dry the fountain pen after washing. Protect the nib section of the pen and shake it a few times to force out deposited water inside the cavities. If possible, leave the pen's nib section wrapped in a clean cloth overnight; through capillary action, water will drain out and be absorbed freely by the cloth. The pen should be ready and dry in the morning.

Store the pen with the nib up. Like any other fine writing instruments, affordable fountain pens must not be placed on the table carelessly. A pen laid flat on a surface for some time will cause the ink to coagulate and harden, making the pen technically useless. If possible, keep the nib tightly capped and store it upright with the nib up.
